Missed Garbage Pickup in Chicago: What to Do About It
Cart still full the day after pickup day? Chicago's Streets & Sanitation will send a crew back — but only if you file the request. Here's when to report, how, and what to do about broken or missing carts while you're at it.
First, make sure it's actually missed
Chicago collects household garbage weekly from the black carts, on a schedule that runs by area. Before filing, check two things:
- Has your full pickup day actually passed? Crews can run late in the day. The practical rule: report a missed pickup after your scheduled day has come and gone, not at noon on pickup day.
- Was it a holiday week? City holidays shift collection later in the week. If there was a holiday, give it an extra day before reporting.
Also worth a look: was the cart accessible? Cars blocking the alley, construction, or a cart buried behind snow can cause a legitimate skip — mention it in your report if so.
How to file the missed pickup request
Same three doors as every Chicago service request: call 311 (312-744-5000 from outside the city), use 311.chicago.gov, or file from your phone with an Open311 app like Chicago Works. Include:
- Your address, and where the cart sits — alley or curb.
- Which cart — black garbage cart or blue recycling cart (missed recycling pickups are reportable too, as their own request type).
- A photo of the full cart, which timestamps the situation and helps if there's any question later.
The request is routed to Streets & Sanitation, which schedules a return trip for your cart. You'll get a service request (SR) number to track it, and the request closes when the crew has come back.
If it keeps happening
One missed week is an annoyance; a pattern is worth documenting. File the request every time it happens — each one has an SR number, and a paper trail of skipped weeks at your address is exactly what your ward office needs if they have to escalate it. Overflowing shared carts, chronic alley dumping, and out-of-cart trash piles are separate sanitation request types you can also file.
One thing a missed-pickup request won't cover: material the regular crew was never going to take. Construction debris, large furniture, and similar bulky items aren't standard black-cart collection — they have their own disposal routes and request types. If your cart was emptied but the pile next to it wasn't, that's a different request, not a missed pickup.
Filing it in seconds with Chicago Works
This is the kind of small, recurring chore where the phone call feels like more work than the problem deserves. Chicago Works shrinks it to a few taps from your back porch:
- Snap the full cart (optional, but it strengthens the request).
- Auto-locate — GPS fills in your address and ward; nudge the pin to the alley if that's where the cart lives.
- Pick Missed Garbage Pickup and submit — straight into the city's official Open311 queue, no hold time, no account.
Then the Service Tracker does the follow-up for you, showing live status from the city's system until the return crew has emptied the cart and the request is closed. Trash cart repairs, street cleaning, and the rest of the sanitation categories are all in the same list.
Get your cart emptied
File a missed pickup in three taps and watch the Service Tracker until it's marked resolved. Cart broken? That's a request in the app too.
